Requirement: This customer had several narrow comms racks in various sites. Narrow racks make cable management difficult, and over the years, desk moves and equipment changes had made the racks very full and difficult to manage. Overly long cables had been wrapped around equipment making hardware replacement tricky. Space and power in the rack were at a premium.
Solution: Shield IT Solutions were engaged to overhaul the racks, updating the existing cabling standard and bringing the cabinet back in line with this standard.
Shield IT started with an audit of floor ports in the office areas to identified floor ports in use. Redundant patching was identified and then removed to free up space. After that each remaining connection was documented and all cabling removed. Once free of cabling, the equipment in the rack was re-arranged to maximise the space available and to minimise the cable lengths required. Existing patch cables were re-used wherever possible and overly long cables were replaced with cables of a suitable length. Any cables not adhering to the cabling standard were replaced. All cables were individually labelled with their corresponding switch port to ensure that in future patching could be easily identified without the need to trace individual cables.
Once completed, all telephones and PCs were checked to ensure they had network connectivity. The work was carried out with minimal disruption ensuring the users didn't notice the work had even taken place.
