Requirement: This customer had a requirement to upgrade an existing Blue Coat and SurfControl solution as the Blue Coat devices had reached end of life. The solution was proving both expensive and difficult to manage. Only limited reporting was available and this required a separate application to run on a server elsewhere in the network. Logs were uploaded daily to the server and imported manually to the reporting software.
Solution: After an evaluation process two Bloxx Web Filter appliances were chosen, each deployed on a separate Internet link for resiliency. Integrated into Active Directory, filtering policies were created based on group membership rather than individual user rules as in the previous Blue Coat installation. This allowed existing support staff to grant Internet access by moving users into relevant Active Directory groups rather than modifying the proxy server configuration.
Not only did the new Bloxx appliances improve the performance of web filtering for the customer, but an added benefit was that Bloxx also identified a number of websites which had been stealthily compromised. Initially these sites appeared to be blocked incorrectly, but on further investigation the websites had been compromised and hidden links inserted. The customer was able to advise these organisations (including customers and partner organisations) that their sites had been compromised and the issues were resolved.
The replacement proxy servers also introduced Bloxx Tru-View Technology which combines the best of conventional tools with new intelligent identification and analyses technologies to rapidly classify web traffic in real time.
Tru-View automatically tracks and classifies more effectively than first and second generation filters and removes the inherent weaknesses in using human-only classification giving you the most up-to-date URL blocking and control.
By clustering the devices, logging information could be shared between devices to provide comprehensive reports, with the latest data, whenever required. To give the IT management team a better view on Internet usage within the organisation, various scheduled reports were setup to run weekly.
